Wow man it is really wonderful to see all these tributes pouring in for James Kochalka’s autobiographical comic strip, American Elf. Kochalka ended it a few days ago after a full fourteen years of daily strips. I was a late convert - I first came across American Elf a couple of years ago - but Kochalka’s work ethic and uncanny ability to make small observations significant were hugely influential for me. Kochalka inspired me to experiment with my own memoir comics. It’s really cool to see how many others he inspired, too. This dude has had an impact.
Just like with Harvey Pekar, John Porcellino, and all the comix medium’s other earnest truth-tellers, the whole is so much greater than the sum of the parts. You’ve created a legacy, President Kochalka. I’m going to miss my four panels a day with you, but I understand the need to move on to the next magical dimension. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
Oh yeah, and if you’ve never read American Elf, go to americanelf.com right now. Start at the beginning and don’t stop until your brain has melted into sweet sticky cartoon juice.

This is a hilarious American Elf tribute comic. Normally I don’t appreciate even vaguely threatening internet posts...
